India Nepal Relations received a significant boost as External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Nepal’s Foreign Affairs Minister Shisir Khanal held high-level talks in New Delhi on Saturday, focusing on strengthening cooperation in trade, security, connectivity, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and other emerging sectors.
New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Saturday highlighted the deep-rooted and enduring relationship between India and Nepal, stating that the two neighbouring countries continue to work closely on security, connectivity, economic development, and regional cooperation. He made the remarks during a meeting with Nepal’s Foreign Affairs Minister Shisir Khanal in New Delhi.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Jaishankar described India Nepal Relations as a unique partnership built on strong people-to-people connections, cultural affinity, and shared historical traditions. He emphasized that both nations have consistently stood by each other during times of need and continue to collaborate across a wide range of sectors.
The External Affairs Minister noted that India and Nepal share a long and uniquely open border, making cooperation on security and border management particularly important. He said both countries have maintained close coordination to ensure stability and security along the border while facilitating the movement of people and goods.
Dr. Jaishankar also conveyed his best wishes for the success of the Nepal government and expressed confidence that bilateral cooperation would continue to expand in the coming years.
Strong Foundation of India Nepal Relations
Highlighting the strength of India Nepal Relations, Dr. Jaishankar said the partnership is founded on centuries-old cultural, religious, and social ties. Millions of people on both sides of the border maintain close family, educational, and economic connections, contributing to one of the most vibrant bilateral relationships in South Asia.
He noted that the objectives outlined by the Nepal government align closely with India’s neighbourhood development initiatives. According to the minister, this alignment provides an opportunity for both countries to deepen cooperation and achieve shared development goals.
Over the years, bilateral ties have expanded steadily in sectors such as trade, commerce, investment, infrastructure development, energy, education, disaster management, and cultural exchange.
New Areas of Cooperation
Dr. Jaishankar said India and Nepal now have an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation in emerging sectors that are shaping the future global economy.
He identified startups, artificial intelligence (AI), information technology, renewable energy, and innovation as key areas where both countries can collaborate more closely. Enhanced cooperation in these fields could contribute to economic growth, job creation, technological advancement, and sustainable development in both nations.
The minister added that expanding cooperation in modern sectors would complement existing partnerships and open new avenues for mutual benefit.
Nepal Reaffirms Priority to India
Speaking during the meeting, Nepal’s Foreign Affairs Minister Shisir Khanal described India as Nepal’s most important partner and reiterated that Nepal places the highest priority on its relationship with India.
Mr. Khanal said Nepal and India are not merely neighbouring countries but stakeholders in a proud and ancient civilization with deep historical and cultural links. He emphasized that the relationship between the two countries is based on trust, shared values, and mutual respect.
The Nepalese minister also expressed gratitude to India for its support in ensuring the supply of fuel and fertilizers during disruptions caused by the ongoing crisis in West Asia. He acknowledged India’s assistance in helping Nepal maintain essential supplies during challenging circumstances.
Expanding Regional Cooperation
The discussions between the two ministers focused on strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors while exploring opportunities in new and emerging domains. Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining regular engagement and enhancing connectivity, trade, and investment.
The meeting reflected the commitment of both countries to further strengthen India Nepal Relations and deepen cooperation in areas of strategic, economic, and social importance. Mr. Khanal arrived in New Delhi on Friday for a three-day official visit aimed at reviewing bilateral cooperation and exploring new opportunities for partnership between the two neighbouring nations.
