Kiren Rijiju opposition Parliament debate row escalated on Monday after the Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister slammed opposition parties for staying away from discussions on key legislation, saying important bills were passed in both Houses of Parliament without a single opposition member participating in the debate. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Rijiju said the opposition’s claims of being denied speaking time did not match its conduct inside the House.

Kiren Rijiju Opposition Parliament Debate Escalates

Rijiju said that in the Lok Sabha, the Supreme Court Number of Judges Amendment Bill 2026, was passed on the day, but no member from any opposition party rose to take part in the discussion. He said the same pattern was witnessed in the Rajya Sabha, where the MSME Amendment Bill 2026 was passed without opposition participation.

According to the Minister, opposition leaders routinely tell the media outside Parliament that the government does not allow them to speak in the House. However, he said that when they are actually given the floor and an opportunity to raise their concerns, they choose to stay silent instead. Rijiju described this as contradictory behaviour that undermines the opposition’s own arguments about being muzzled during parliamentary proceedings.

Two Key Bills Cleared Without Discussion

The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, and the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026, both cleared the respective Houses on the same day. Bills of this nature typically deal with structural or regulatory changes that can have a wide impact, making opposition input during debate an important part of the legislative process. Rijiju’s remarks suggest that the government views the lack of opposition engagement as a missed opportunity to scrutinise these bills on the floor of the House.

The Minister’s comments come amid an ongoing standoff between the treasury and opposition benches over the conduct of proceedings in the current session, with both sides accusing each other of disrupting the functioning of Parliament.

Kharge Raises NEET Paper Leak Protest Issue

Even as Rijiju made his remarks, Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, raised Mallikarjun Kharge NEET paper leak issue, separately outside Parliament. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Kharge demanded that the government issue a statement in the House regarding the alleged Jantar Mantar student protest police action against students who were protesting over the NEET paper leak controversy.

Kharge said the matter required an urgent response from the government, given the seriousness of the allegations concerning how the protesting students were treated. He said such incidents could not be brushed aside and that the House deserved a clear explanation from the government’s side.

Demand For Amit Shah To Address Parliament

Kharge specifically raised the Amit Shah statement Parliament demand, saying the Union Home Minister should come to Parliament and make a statement on the alleged police action against the NEET protesters. He argued that given the Home Ministry’s responsibility for law and order and policing in the national capital, it was only appropriate for Shah to clarify the government’s position in the House.

The demand adds another point of friction to an already tense session, with the opposition seeking accountability on the Jantar Mantar incident even as the government maintains that opposition parties are failing to use the floor time available to them for substantive debate.

With both sides trading charges outside the House, the ongoing session of Parliament continues to see limited consensus, as unresolved issues around bill discussions and the NEET protest crackdown add to the friction between the treasury and opposition benches on multiple fronts.

As the Parliament session 2026 progresses, both the passage of key bills and the demand for accountability on the Jantar Mantar incident are likely to remain contentious talking points between the Congress opposition and the treasury benches.
