The NEET UG 2026 Counselling process is set to become more transparent and student-friendly, with the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) introducing a series of significant reforms ahead of the admission process for MBBS, BDS and other undergraduate medical courses. The Union Health Ministry has confirmed that the revised counselling system is designed to simplify admissions, reduce paperwork and improve transparency for lakhs of medical aspirants across the country.
The new guidelines introduce fully digital processes for seat upgradation, resignation and NRI document verification, marking one of the most comprehensive changes to the counselling framework in recent years. The official counselling schedule is expected to be released shortly, after which eligible candidates can begin the online admission process.
Online Seat Upgradation Without Physical Reporting
One of the biggest reforms in NEET UG 2026 Counselling relates to the seat upgradation process.
Under the revised system, candidates opting to upgrade their seats in subsequent counselling rounds will no longer be required to physically report to the college allotted in the earlier round to remain eligible for upgradation.
Instead, the complete seat upgrade process will be conducted online through the MCC portal. This change is expected to save students significant travel expenses, reduce administrative delays and eliminate unnecessary reporting at institutions before the final allotment.
The reform is particularly beneficial for students participating in multiple counselling rounds while seeking admission to their preferred medical colleges.
Online Resignation Facility Introduced
The Medical Counselling Committee has also digitised the resignation process.
Earlier, candidates wishing to surrender an allotted seat had to visit their respective colleges in person and complete formal documentation. Under the new system, students will be able to submit resignation requests directly through the MCC portal, making the process faster, more transparent and easier to track.
The online resignation facility is expected to reduce vacant seats caused by delayed resignations and help improve seat allocation efficiency during subsequent counselling rounds.
NRI Quota Verification Goes Digital
Another major change affects candidates applying under the NRI quota.
Eligible applicants will now be able to upload and verify all required documents through an online verification system instead of submitting physical documents before designated authorities.
The digital verification process aims to reduce delays, standardise document scrutiny and provide a more convenient admission experience for NRI candidates applying to medical colleges under the All India Quota counselling process.
Training Conducted for Smooth Implementation
To ensure that the revised counselling system functions smoothly, the MCC has conducted training sessions for state counselling authorities and participating medical institutions.
Medical colleges have also been instructed to publish complete details regarding available seats, tuition fees, bond conditions, admission procedures and other important information well before counselling begins.
The move is intended to enable candidates to compare institutions carefully and make informed choices while filling their preferences.
Counselling Schedule Expected Soon
The NEET UG 2026 Counselling schedule is expected to be released shortly on the official MCC counselling portal.
Once notified, eligible candidates will be able to register for admissions under the 15% All India Quota (AIQ), along with seats in AIIMS, JIPMER, Central Universities, Deemed Universities, ESIC institutions and other participating medical colleges.
Admissions for the remaining 85% State Quota seats will continue to be conducted independently by the respective state counselling authorities according to their own schedules.
Candidates have been advised to regularly monitor official notifications and keep essential documents ready before the registration process begins.
Why the Counselling Process Was Revised
The reforms come after repeated feedback from students, parents and medical colleges regarding procedural delays, repeated physical reporting and document verification challenges during previous counselling cycles.
Over the past few years, the MCC has steadily expanded digital services in medical admissions to improve transparency, minimise human intervention and ensure faster seat allocation. The latest reforms build upon those initiatives by reducing unnecessary travel, improving online services and creating a more streamlined admission system.
Officials believe the revised process will also help fill vacant seats more efficiently during later counselling rounds while reducing confusion among candidates.
What Aspirants Should Do Next
With the counselling process expected to begin soon, candidates should ensure they have all required documents, including their NEET UG 2026 scorecard, admit card, Class 10 and 12 certificates, identity proof, category certificates (if applicable), PwD certificates and NRI-related documents, ready for verification.
Medical aspirants should also regularly visit the official MCC counselling portal for updates on registration dates, choice filling, seat allotment schedules and reporting deadlines.
