Jewar Airport Commercial Operations Begin on June 15, 2026
The Noida International Airport at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh commenced commercial flight operations today, June 15, 2026, marking one of the most significant milestones in India’s civil aviation history and opening a new gateway to the skies for millions of travellers across the Delhi-NCR region and western Uttar Pradesh.
The Jewar airport commercial operations launch was celebrated with a symbolic inaugural flight carrying approximately 170 farmers from the Jewar region, including 20 women, who had donated their land for the construction of the airport. The farmers, led by Jewar MLA Dhirendra Singh, travelled on IndiGo flight 6E-2278 from Jewar to Lucknow, where they were scheduled to meet Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in a special interaction organised to recognise their contribution.
The first scheduled commercial service operated on the Jewar to Bengaluru route, connecting north India’s newest aviation hub with one of the country’s busiest tech and business cities from day one. IndiGo was joined by Akasa Air and Air India Express as launch carriers, with four destinations commencing operations on the inaugural day.
Jewar Airport Commercial Operations: What the Minister Said
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu described the Jewar airport commercial operations launch as a day of great joy and a historic milestone for the country. He said the airport will serve as a hub for both domestic and international operations and outlined an ambitious expansion roadmap for the facility.
“We will start with a capacity of 1.2 crore passengers, and the terminal will be expanded once that capacity is saturated. Ultimately, by the fourth phase, we aim to increase the capacity to 7 crore passengers per year,” Naidu said, adding that once completed, the Jewar airport is set to become one of the largest airports in Asia.
The Minister attributed the project to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen connectivity and develop world-class aviation infrastructure across the country, and noted that it has been implemented under the leadership of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He said the farmers who contributed their land were being honoured on the inaugural flight as a gesture of gratitude for their sacrifice.
About Noida International Airport: Investment, Infrastructure and Clearances
The Noida International Airport, commonly known as Jewar Airport, is among the largest greenfield airport projects in India. Phase 1 has been developed at a total investment of around Rs 11,200 crore under a Public-Private Partnership model, with Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International, serving as the developer.
The airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 28, 2026, with Jewar airport commercial operations beginning today following receipt of all necessary regulatory clearances. The airport received its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation on March 6, 2026, and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security subsequently granted approval for its Aerodrome Security Program, confirming that its security framework and operating procedures met all regulatory requirements.
The Phase 1 infrastructure includes a full-length CAT-III compliant runway, allowing operations in low-visibility conditions such as the dense winter fog that frequently affects northern India, an integrated terminal building, and an air traffic control tower. The airport is designed to handle 1.2 crore passengers annually in its current phase.

The Jewar airport commercial operations mark a transformational moment for air travel in the Delhi-NCR region, which has long relied on the heavily congested Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi as its primary aviation gateway. Noida International Airport is located approximately 72 km from IGI Airport, 40 km from Noida, 28 km from Greater Noida, 65 km from Gurugram, and 130 km from Agra, serving a vast catchment area.
The airport is connected to major roads including the Yamuna Expressway, Western Peripheral Expressway, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Plans are in place to link the airport to the metro network, with Noida and Delhi to be connected through a hassle-free metro service, significantly reducing travel time for passengers from across the region.
For districts in western Uttar Pradesh including Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Ghaziabad, and Etawah, the Jewar airport commercial operations open up direct air connectivity that previously required lengthy road journeys to IGI Airport, promising to transform travel patterns and economic opportunities across the region.
What Comes Next: Vision for Asia’s Largest Airport
The long-term vision for Noida International Airport is one of the most ambitious in Indian aviation. Across four phases planned through 2050, the airport is expected to grow to accommodate 7 crore passengers annually, served by six runways, making it one of the largest airports in Asia by capacity.
The airport has been designed as a net-zero emissions facility, integrating energy-efficient systems and environmentally responsible practices, reflecting a broader commitment to sustainable aviation infrastructure. With the Jewar airport commercial operations now fully underway and IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express already operational from day one, more airlines are expected to commence services in the coming weeks as passenger traffic builds and the airport establishes itself as a genuine alternative to IGI Airport for the tens of millions of people across its catchment area.
