Hyderabad:
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has strongly reprimanded officials over the administration’s response to the heavy rains that lashed Hyderabad on June 9, warning of strict action against those found negligent during emergencies.
Taking serious note of rain-related disruptions, the Chief Minister said that despite holding a review meeting on June 1 and issuing advance warnings, the response on the ground fell short of expectations.
During a high-level review meeting, Revanth Reddy reminded officials that he had conducted a review on June 1 and issued advance instructions ahead of the monsoon. However, he noted that the administration’s response during the June 9 rainfall was inadequate and exposed significant gaps in coordination among departments.
The Chief Minister specifically pointed to the lack of coordination between municipal authorities and the police department in core urban areas, stating that poor inter-departmental communication had contributed to traffic disruptions and public inconvenience. He emphasized that emergency response during heavy rains must be guided by data related to waterlogging points, black spots and traffic congestion zones so that officials can act proactively instead of reacting after problems escalate.
Issuing a stern warning, Revanth Reddy said officials cannot remain absent from the field during emergencies. He directed all departments to ensure that officers are physically present on the ground during heavy rains and made it clear that strict action would be taken against those found negligent. He further warned that human errors leading to inconvenience for the public would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The Chief Minister also expressed concern over severe traffic jams witnessed across parts of Hyderabad during the rainfall. He said traffic gridlocks caused by negligence are unacceptable and directed authorities to immediately fill all vacant positions in the Traffic Department to strengthen the city’s capacity to handle monsoon-related challenges.
Sending a strong message of accountability from the highest level, Revanth Reddy declared that if required, he himself would step onto the roads to oversee relief and response measures. The remark underscored his government’s emphasis on hands-on governance and administrative accountability during crises.
Hyderabad has frequently witnessed waterlogging, overflowing drains and traffic snarls during monsoon seasons, affecting thousands of commuters every year. With the rains expected to intensify in the coming weeks, the state government is now under pressure to ensure better coordination, quicker response mechanisms and improved preparedness to minimize disruption to daily life.
“Despite advance warnings, officials failed to respond effectively during the June 9 rains,” the Chief Minister reportedly said.
