A suspended police head constable went on a late-night drunken driving rampage on the Delhi-Lucknow Highway in Amroha, injuring two pedestrians and sparking panic before he was chased down and assaulted by an angry mob, officials said on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Sanjeev Tomar, was driving his car under the influence of alcohol around 11 pm on Monday when he struck two pedestrians near Joya. He did not stop and continued speeding down the busy highway even after one of his car’s tyres flew off, driving on the bare rim and creating sparks.

Amit Kumar, a resident of Didauli, was returning home with his family from Joya when the collision occurred nearby.

The episode came to an end near Didauli when alarmed motorists and local residents chased down the vehicle and intercepted it. Enraged by his actions, the crowd dragged Tomar out of the car and thrashed him before a police team arrived and rescued him from the mob, taking him into custody.

The two injured victims were rushed to a nearby private hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.

Case Registered, Departmental Action to Follow

Amroha additional SP Akhilesh Bhadauria said a case was registered against Tomar under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), based on a complaint filed by the victims.

Station House Officer Jitendra Baliyan said the entire incident is under investigation, and further legal and departmental action will be taken based on the findings.

Tomar, who was attached to the Dial 112 emergency response unit, had recently been suspended for dereliction of duty. A report submitted by the local police station had led to his suspension by the Superintendent of Police even before the latest incident.

Officials confirmed that Tomar now faces stricter departmental action alongside the fresh criminal charges.
