Phu Quoc Boat Accident: 15 Indian Tourists Dead, 21 Rescued
Fifteen Indian tourists have died after a speedboat carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members capsized near Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island, with the Indian Embassy in Vietnam releasing the official identities of the victims and confirming that 10 of the deceased were from Tamil Nadu, three from Andhra Pradesh, and two from Kerala.
The Phu Quoc boat accident is one of the deadliest incidents involving Indian nationals abroad in recent years, prompting an immediate response from the Indian government, the establishment of emergency control rooms in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and a personal expression of grief from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Twenty-one people were rescued from the overturned vessel, while all 15 victims were recovered during the search and rescue operation that followed the capsizing. Several survivors sustained injuries, with some requiring hospital treatment.
Phu Quoc Boat Accident: What Happened Near May Rut Ngoai Islet
The accident occurred when the speedboat overturned approximately 400 metres off May Rut Ngoai Islet while returning from Hon May Rut Island to An Thoi Port. Vietnamese authorities said rough sea conditions, accompanied by strong winds and high waves, are suspected to have contributed to the vessel capsizing.
Rescue teams, local boats, and emergency responders rushed to the scene soon after the incident was reported. Rescue personnel reportedly worked for hours to locate passengers who became trapped inside the overturned boat, with the search operation continuing until all those on board were accounted for.
The accident involved a single speedboat that had been carrying the tourists on what appears to have been a recreational island-hopping excursion in the waters around Phu Quoc, one of Vietnam’s most popular tourist destinations and a major draw for Indian visitors in recent years.
Indian Embassy Response and Emergency Coordination
The Indian Embassy in Vietnam described the incident as a tragic accident and announced the establishment of emergency control rooms in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to assist the families of victims and survivors. Embassy officials said they are working closely with Vietnamese local authorities to coordinate medical support, documentation, and the repatriation of the mortal remains of the 15 Indian nationals who lost their lives.
The embassy released the official identities of the victims, confirming the state-wise breakdown of 10 from Tamil Nadu, three from Andhra Pradesh, and two from Kerala. The release of identities follows coordination with Vietnamese authorities and is intended to assist families in making formal claims and initiating procedures related to the repatriation of their loved ones.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Indian lives and extended his condolences to the bereaved families, assuring that the Government of India, through the Indian Embassy in Vietnam, is providing every possible assistance to the survivors and the families of those who lost their lives.
Vietnamese Investigation Into the Capsizing
Vietnamese authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the Phu Quoc boat accident. Preliminary findings indicate that adverse weather and rough sea conditions may have played a significant role in the capsizing, though officials are also examining whether operational or safety lapses on the part of the vessel operator contributed to the tragedy.
The investigation is expected to scrutinise whether the speedboat was operating within safety guidelines, whether appropriate warnings were issued about sea conditions before the journey, and whether the vessel had adequate safety equipment and life-saving gear for all passengers on board.
Phu Quoc is a major international tourist destination, and the island and its surrounding waters host thousands of tourists on boat excursions every year. The tragedy has raised broader questions about the oversight and safety standards applied to commercial speedboat operations in the area, particularly during periods of rough weather.
