New Delhi: The landmark India-UK CETA officially came into force on Tuesday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi describing it as a significant milestone in the strategic partnership between India and the United Kingdom. Along with the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), the India-UK Social Security Agreement also became operational, marking a new phase in bilateral economic cooperation.

Sharing a social media post by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, Prime Minister Modi said the implementation of the agreements reflects the growing trust between the world’s two major democracies and their shared commitment to building a future-oriented partnership based on trade, technology, investment and innovation.

India-UK CETA to Expand Opportunities for Farmers and MSMEs

Highlighting the benefits of the India-UK CETA, the Prime Minister said the agreement will provide fresh momentum to India’s farmers, entrepreneurs and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). He noted that several key sectors will receive stronger access to the UK market, creating new export opportunities and supporting economic growth.

The agreement is also expected to improve market access for a wide range of Indian goods while encouraging greater trade and investment between the two countries. Industry experts believe the pact will strengthen India’s export competitiveness by reducing trade barriers and enhancing business confidence.

Technology, Innovation and Skilled Mobility to Receive Major Boost

Prime Minister Modi said the trade agreement goes beyond merchandise trade by strengthening cooperation in technology, innovation and professional services. He emphasised that the partnership will promote collaboration in emerging sectors while supporting greater mobility for skilled Indian professionals seeking opportunities in the United Kingdom.

The agreement is expected to create new avenues for businesses operating in technology, digital services and innovation-driven industries, further deepening economic ties between India and the UK.

Social Security Agreement to Benefit Indian Professionals

Alongside the trade pact, the India-UK Social Security Agreement has also come into force. The Prime Minister said the agreement will provide valuable support to Indian professionals working temporarily in the United Kingdom.

The arrangement is expected to improve social security coordination for eligible employees on temporary assignments, reducing compliance burdens for Indian companies and enhancing the competitiveness of businesses operating internationally.

India-UK Trade Partnership Continues to Grow

The implementation of the India-UK CETA marks the culmination of extensive negotiations aimed at strengthening bilateral economic relations. India and the United Kingdom have steadily expanded cooperation across trade, investment, education, defence, technology and clean energy in recent years. The agreement is expected to further accelerate bilateral trade while encouraging investment flows and deeper business partnerships.

The United Kingdom remains one of India’s important economic partners in Europe, with both countries working to diversify supply chains, promote innovation and enhance collaboration across high-growth sectors.

Agreement Reflects Long-Term Strategic Vision

Prime Minister Modi said the implementation of both agreements demonstrates the strong trust shared by India and the United Kingdom. He expressed confidence that the partnership will continue contributing to shared prosperity while creating new opportunities for businesses, professionals and investors in both countries.

With the India-UK CETA now in force, both governments are expected to focus on effective implementation of the agreement, enabling businesses and exporters to fully utilise the benefits of expanded market access, improved trade facilitation and stronger economic cooperation.
