Kolkata: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari was on Thursday elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party in West Bengal, paving the way for him to become the first BJP Chief Minister in the state’s political history.

The decision was taken during a BJP legislature party meeting held in Kolkata in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, senior BJP leaders, and newly elected MLAs. Party leaders confirmed that Adhikari’s name received unanimous support during the meeting, officially making him the BJP’s chief ministerial choice for West Bengal.

The oath-taking ceremony of the new BJP government will take place at Kolkata’s iconic Brigade Parade Ground on May 9, where several top BJP leaders are expected to attend.

BJP Creates History in West Bengal

The BJP’s rise to power in West Bengal marks one of the biggest political shifts in the state in decades. The party secured a clear majority in the recently concluded Assembly elections, defeating the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamata Banerjee.

Political analysts describe the BJP victory in Bengal as a historic breakthrough for the party in eastern India, where regional parties and the Left Front had dominated politics for years.

The BJP had steadily expanded its political base in West Bengal over the last few election cycles. The party emerged as the principal opposition in the 2021 Assembly elections and significantly increased its organizational strength across districts before the 2026 polls.

Who Is Suvendu Adhikari?

Suvendu Adhikari is one of the most influential political leaders in West Bengal. Born in Purba Medinipur district, he started his political career with the Congress before joining the Trinamool Congress (TMC), where he became a close associate of Mamata Banerjee during the anti-Left movement in Bengal.

Adhikari later left the TMC and joined the BJP in 2020, a move that dramatically changed Bengal’s political landscape. He gained national attention after defeating Mamata Banerjee in the high-profile Nandigram Assembly election in 2021.

Since then, Adhikari has become the BJP’s strongest face in West Bengal and served as the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly.

Amit Shah Attends BJP Legislature Meeting

Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended the BJP legislature party meeting in Kolkata and congratulated party workers and leaders for the historic victory in Bengal.

According to BJP sources, Shah emphasized the importance of development, governance, and law and order in the state during discussions with newly elected legislators.

Senior BJP leaders from across the country are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 9.

Tight Security Ahead of Swearing-In Ceremony

Security arrangements have been intensified in Kolkata and several sensitive districts ahead of the swearing-in ceremony. Additional police personnel have been deployed in parts of the state following reports of political tension after the election results.

The Brigade Parade Ground, where the oath-taking ceremony will be held, is being prepared to host thousands of BJP supporters and party workers expected to attend the event.

BJP Begins New Political Chapter in Bengal

With Suvendu Adhikari set to take oath as Chief Minister, the BJP will officially begin its first government in West Bengal. Political observers believe the transition could reshape the state’s political direction and strengthen the BJP’s presence in eastern India ahead of future national elections.

The formation of a BJP government in Bengal is expected to have a major impact on both state and national politics, making Suvendu Adhikari one of the most closely watched political leaders in the country.
