Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor announced his electoral debut at a Patna press conference, choosing the high-profile Bankipur Assembly bypoll on July 30 as his first-ever contest after decades as India’s most sought-after political strategist.
Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor on Tuesday announced that he will contest the upcoming by-election from Bihar’s Bankipur Assembly constituency marking his first-ever electoral contest after years of working as a political strategist and subsequently launching his own political outfit. Announcing his candidacy at a press conference in Patna, Kishor described the bypoll as a “referendum” on the performance of the BJP-led government in Bihar and appealed to voters to support what he called a new political alternative.
Prashant Kishor Calls Bankipur Bypoll a Referendum on BJP
Kishor said the Bankipur bypoll would provide an opportunity for the electorate to express its opinion on the state government’s governance and development record. He urged the nearly four lakh voters of the constituency to vote for change, asserting that the election was about Bihar’s future rather than the fortunes of any individual candidate.
Addressing party workers, Kishor said his objective was not merely to win a seat but to build a new political culture centred on governance, accountability and public participation. He expressed confidence that voters would back his vision for Bihar and reiterated his commitment to bringing systemic changes in the state’s politics through the Jan Suraaj platform.
Why the Bankipur Seat Is Vacant
The Bankipur Assembly seat fell vacant after BJP leader Nitin Nabin resigned as MLA following his election to the Rajya Sabha earlier this year. The Election Commission has scheduled polling for the bypoll on July 30, making it one of the most closely watched political contests in the state this year.
Bankipur has traditionally been considered a BJP stronghold, and Kishor’s entry is expected to make the election one of the most high-profile bypolls in Bihar in recent years.
From Kingmaker to Candidate – Prashant Kishor’s Political Journey
Kishor’s decision marks a significant shift in his political journey. Known for designing successful election campaigns for several major political parties across the country including the BJP, Congress, TMC and JDU he entered active politics through the Jan Suraaj movement before formally launching the Jan Suraaj Party.
Although the party contested the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, Kishor himself chose not to enter the electoral fray at the time. He later publicly acknowledged that the decision may have been a mistake — a rare admission that now sets the stage for his long-awaited electoral debut at Bankipur.
Opposition Weighs Support as Contest Heats Up
The announcement has added a new dimension to the Bankipur contest, with political observers viewing it as a direct battle between the BJP and Jan Suraaj. The development has also sparked discussions within opposition parties over whether they should extend support to Kishor in an effort to consolidate anti-BJP votes in the constituency.
Whether the opposition chooses to back Kishor or field its own candidates will be a key factor in determining how competitive the contest becomes and whether Bankipur delivers a surprise result on July 30.
