Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw has expressed confidence that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project will be fully completed by the end of 2029, marking a major milestone in India’s high-speed rail ambitions. Speaking to the media in Ahmedabad after reviewing ongoing railway infrastructure projects in Gujarat, the minister said construction is progressing rapidly, with nearly 80 per cent of the Gujarat section already completed.
The minister said the project is being executed in a phased manner to ensure timely delivery and efficient commissioning of various sections. He announced that the first operational stretch between Surat and Bilimora is expected to become functional next year, offering passengers their first experience of India’s high-speed rail network.
Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Advances in Phases
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project is India’s first high-speed rail corridor and is being implemented by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) with technical cooperation from Japan. Once operational, the corridor will significantly reduce travel time between the two major commercial centres from around six to seven hours by conventional rail to nearly two hours on selected services.
During his visit, Mr Vaishnaw inspected the ongoing construction at the Ahmedabad Bullet Train Station and interacted with engineers, project officials and construction workers. He appreciated their efforts and reviewed the progress of civil works, station development and associated infrastructure.
The minister noted that construction activities have accelerated substantially over the past two years after land acquisition and utility shifting were completed across most parts of Gujarat. Several river bridges, viaducts and station structures are now at advanced stages of construction, reflecting the project’s steady progress.
Railway Redevelopment Projects Receive Fresh Push
Besides reviewing the bullet train project, Mr. Vaishnaw also assessed the progress of several railway infrastructure initiatives in Ahmedabad. He announced that the Omnagar underpass will be completed before the upcoming Navratri festival, improving local traffic movement and commuter convenience.
The minister also reviewed the redevelopment of Ahmedabad Railway Station, which is being modernised with upgraded passenger amenities, better accessibility and enhanced multimodal connectivity. Discussions were also held on the master plan for the redevelopment of Asarva Railway Station, which is being transformed into a modern transport hub with improved passenger facilities and seamless integration with the city’s transport network.
To improve connectivity around major railway stations, officials also reviewed proposals to extend the Sabarmati Station Road and enhance access near Shahpur, helping ease congestion and facilitate smoother movement for commuters.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor spans approximately 508 kilometres and includes 12 stations, connecting major cities in Gujarat and Maharashtra. The project incorporates advanced Japanese Shinkansen technology, internationally recognised for its high safety standards, punctuality and operational efficiency. It is expected to strengthen regional connectivity, encourage economic growth and create employment opportunities during both construction and operations.
The project has witnessed significant progress in recent months, particularly in Gujarat, where most civil construction packages are under execution. Work in Maharashtra has also gained momentum following the completion of key land acquisition processes. Officials believe the phased commissioning strategy will help test operational systems before the full corridor becomes functional.
Once completed, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project is expected to transform intercity travel in western India by offering faster, safer and more reliable transportation. The government believes the project will also serve as a foundation for future high-speed rail corridors across the country, supporting India’s long-term infrastructure modernisation and economic development goals.
