New Delhi: CJI Surya Kant on Monday cautioned litigants against politicising the alleged Ram Temple donation theft case, observing that the matter should be treated as a criminal investigation rather than a political issue. The apex court underlined that its priority was to ensure a fair and impartial probe into the allegations and urged all parties to allow the legal process to take its course without interference.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant made these observations while hearing a batch of petitions seeking a court-monitored investigation into the alleged embezzlement of donations meant for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The remarks came during the course of proceedings in which the court sought to draw a clear distinction between the legal process and the public debate surrounding the case.

Case Involves Alleged Offence, Not Political Dispute: SC

CJI surya kant remarked that the case essentially involved the alleged commission of an offence and should not be converted into a political controversy. It stressed that the focus of all stakeholders, including the litigants and the investigating agencies, must remain on establishing the facts of the matter through a proper and lawful investigation.

The court reiterated that judicial proceedings exist to determine facts and accountability strictly within the framework of law, and that any attempt to shift the narrative toward political point-scoring would not serve the interests of justice or the petitioners seeking answers.

Supreme Court Seeks Details on SIT Reconstitution

During the hearing, CJI surya kant asked the Uttar Pradesh government to inform it whether the existing Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the matter could be reconstituted or strengthened under the leadership of a senior IPS officer. The Bench sought specific details regarding the current composition of the investigation team, along with an update on the progress made in the probe so far.

This direction indicates that the court intends to closely examine the adequacy of the existing investigative machinery before deciding on further judicial intervention or oversight in the case.

What the Petitioners Are Seeking

The petitions before the CJI surya kant seek an independent and time-bound investigation into allegations that donations collected for the Ram Temple were misappropriated by certain individuals. The petitioners have specifically requested closer judicial oversight of the probe, arguing that a transparent and credible investigation is essential to maintain public confidence in the handling of temple funds.

The plea underscores the sensitivity of the matter, given that the donations in question were contributed by devotees for the construction and upkeep of the Ram Temple, making accountability and transparency central concerns for the petitioners.

CJI Surya Kant Draws Line Between Investigation and Public Discourse

CJI surya kant made it clear that while allegations of financial irregularities must be investigated thoroughly and without delay, public discourse surrounding the case should not be allowed to interfere with the legal process. The Bench observed that the courts are concerned only with ensuring that the investigation is conducted fairly and strictly in accordance with the law, free from the influence of political narratives or public pressure.

This observation reflects the court’s broader concern that sensitive cases involving religious institutions and public donations can often become subject to polarised debate, which may hinder an objective and lawful investigative process.

Next Hearing Scheduled for Next Week

The matter has been posted for further hearing next week, by which time the Uttar Pradesh government is expected to place additional information before the court regarding the SIT’s composition and the current status of the ongoing investigation.

The apex court indicated that it would decide the future course of the proceedings only after examining the state government’s response and evaluating the progress made in the probe, keeping in view the need for a fair, impartial, and depoliticised investigation.
