India U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship: A Dominant Start in Lagos

The India U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship campaign began on a triumphant note as the Indian fencing contingent claimed an impressive 17 medals on the opening day of competition in Lagos, Nigeria. The haul included 4 gold, 4 silver and 9 bronze medals, signaling India’s growing strength in fencing on the international stage.

The Commonwealth Fencing Championship Lagos edition, which got underway on Sunday, saw Indian fencers reach the podium in all six individual events held on the first day, spanning the Sabre, Foil and Epee disciplines. Such a sweep across every category is a rare feat and underlines the depth of talent India has brought to Nigeria for this year’s U-23 Fencing Championship results.

Men’s Events: Wagh Strikes Gold in Sabre

In the men’s Sabre category, Nikhil Wagh delivered a standout performance to win the gold medal, giving India an early lead on the medal table. This was one of the standout Nikhil Wagh gold medal fencing moments of the day. His teammate Lakshay Badser was close behind, settling for silver, while Ashwini Arya and Laishram Moramba both secured bronze medals, giving India a clean sweep of the podium in this event.

The men’s Foil competition also produced strong results, with Tejas Patil winning silver and Hemash Sanasam claiming bronze. In the men’s Epee event, Lokesh Vemani took home silver, while Shaurya Ashwini and Godwin Anbkess both won bronze medals, further padding the tally of India fencing medals 2025 on the opening day.

Women’s Events: Double Gold for India

The women’s contingent matched their male counterparts stride for stride. In the Foil event, Joys Ashita clinched the gold medal, with her teammate Kanaglakshmi winning silver to complete a strong 1-2 finish for India a highlight among this year’s Joys Ashita performances.

Prachi Lohan continued the golden run in the women’s Epee event, winning gold, while Nivedhya Nair and Anupriya both secured bronze medals in the same category. The Prachi Lohan gold further boosted India’s overall standing. In the women’s Sabre event, Jeferlin won gold, Aakhari took silver, and Shreya Gupta rounded off the podium sweep with a bronze medal.

A Strong Foundation for the Championship

With medals in every single individual event on offer on Day 1, the performance of the Indian fencing contingent Nigeria delegation has set a high benchmark for the rest of the competition. The consistency across Sabre, Foil and Epee disciplines, in both men’s and women’s categories, reflects the structured development taking place in Indian fencing at the junior and sub-junior levels.

Fencing has traditionally not enjoyed the same spotlight as other Olympic sports in India, but results like these from the India U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship could help change that narrative. The performances of gold medalists Nikhil Wagh, Joys Ashita, Prachi Lohan and Jeferlin, in particular, are likely to draw attention back home as India looks to build a stronger pipeline of fencing talent ahead of future international assignments, including the Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships.

What’s Next for India

With a majority of the individual events still left to be contested, India will be aiming to add to its already strong medal count from the Commonwealth Fencing Championship Lagos leg. Team events, which typically carry high stakes and require close coordination among athletes, will be a key area to watch in the coming days of the championship.

If the current form is anything to go by, the Indian contingent looks well-placed to finish the U-23 Fencing Championship results table among the top-performing nations. The Sports Ministry and the Fencing Association of India are likely to closely track this edition of the India U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the sport’s presence in the country’s broader Olympic sports ecosystem.
