Chintamani: A 30-year-old man allegedly hacked his estranged wife and her younger sister to death while they slept at their home in JJ Colony in Chintamani, around 85 kilometres from Bengaluru, in the early hours of Monday before surrendering himself to police later the same morning.
The Chintamani double murder case has shocked Karnataka, with the accused, identified as Ejaz, a resident of Gulpet in Kolar, allegedly travelling to Chintamani on his motorcycle during the early hours to carry out the attack. Police said he reached the house at around 6.15 am and attacked his wife Shama (25) and her younger sister Reshma (18) with a sharp weapon, inflicting fatal injuries to their necks. Both women died on the spot.
Shama’s three young children were present inside the house at the time of the attack. According to police, after allegedly killing the two women, Ejaz took the children on his motorcycle to his residence in Gulpet, Kolar, left them there, and then walked into Gulpet Police Station at around 8.30 am to surrender. Kolar Police immediately informed Chintamani Police, following which a detailed investigation was launched.
Chintamani Double Murder Case: What Led to the Attack
Kushal Chousky, Superintendent of Police, Chikkaballapura, said Shama had been staying at her parental home in Chintamani for the past four months after travelling there to attend her mother’s last rites. She reportedly did not return to her husband’s home in Kolar thereafter, leading to frequent disputes between the couple.
Ejaz had been repeatedly asking Shama to return to Kolar with their three children, but she refused. Preliminary probe suggests this may have been the motive behind the crime, the SP said.
Family members alleged that the couple had faced marital problems since their wedding around eight years ago. According to relatives, Ejaz, who repaired sheet-metal items and steel cupboards for a living, was addicted to alcohol and gambling and frequently harassed his wife.
Relatives also claimed that village elders had intervened several times in an effort to resolve the disputes, but the alleged harassment continued. Following her mother’s death, Shama reportedly decided to remain with her family in Chintamani and had informed relatives that she no longer wished to live with her husband.
Family Alleges Earlier Threats
Family members further alleged that Ejaz had repeatedly threatened to kill Shama and her sisters before the incident. Police said these allegations are being verified as part of the ongoing investigation.
The presence of the couple’s three young children inside the house during the alleged attack has added another tragic dimension to the case. According to investigators, the accused took the children to his residence in Kolar before surrendering to police. Authorities have not indicated that the children suffered any physical injuries.
Investigators are also recording statements from relatives, neighbours and other witnesses to establish the sequence of events leading up to the alleged murders.
What Happens Next in the Chintamani Double Murder Case
Ejaz remains in police custody following his surrender at Gulpet Police Station. Police have registered a murder case and are continuing to collect forensic, witness and documentary evidence.
Investigators said they will examine the couple’s marital history, previous disputes, and any earlier complaints that may have been made. Police are also working to reconstruct the events leading up to the alleged murders while recording statements from family members and neighbours.
The Chintamani double murder case remains under active investigation, and officials said further findings may emerge as the probe progresses in the coming days.
