The Mandya temple incident has sparked controversy in Karnataka after the daughter of a BJP MLA was accused of assaulting a woman police sub-inspector deployed for security duty during Bhima Amavasya celebrations. The alleged incident took place on August 12 at Arathi Ukkada Temple in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya district.
The temple witnessed a large gathering of devotees for the religious celebrations, prompting additional security arrangements by the local administration and police. Savitha Patil, a sub-inspector attached to the Mandya Women’s Police Station, was among the officers deployed at the temple to manage the crowd and maintain security.
Mandya Temple Incident: What Happened At The Temple?
According to the complaint filed by Savitha, Aishwarya, the daughter of Tumakuru Rural BJP MLA B. Suresh Gowda, arrived at the temple seeking darshan. She allegedly wanted to enter the sanctum sanctorum but was asked to wait amid the security arrangements and the large crowd.
The situation reportedly escalated into an argument between Aishwarya and the police officer over entry. Savitha alleged that Aishwarya verbally abused her and then slapped her during the confrontation.
The officer further alleged that she was obstructed from carrying out her official duties and was threatened during the incident. Following the alleged confrontation, Savitha approached the police and submitted a complaint.
An FIR was subsequently registered at Kyathanahalli Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections concerning alleged assault and obstruction of a public servant.
MLA B. Suresh Gowda Gives Different Account
Aishwarya’s father, BJP MLA B. Suresh Gowda, has disputed the circumstances described in the police complaint. He claimed that his daughter had gone to the temple to seek darshan and requested permission to enter the sanctum sanctorum.
According to Gowda, his daughter was initially not allowed inside, while a circle inspector was permitted to enter. He alleged that when Aishwarya again requested access, the police officer verbally abused her, leading to the confrontation.
The MLA acknowledged the allegation that his daughter slapped the police officer and apologised for the incident. However, he maintained that the dispute had begun after his daughter was allegedly subjected to abusive language.
Aishwarya is also married to ACP Gautham, adding further attention to the case because it involves a political family as well as a member of the police department.
Police To Examine Evidence
The Mandya temple incident remains under investigation, and the registration of an FIR does not establish the guilt of the accused. Police are expected to examine the statements of the complainant, Aishwarya and other people who were present at the temple when the confrontation occurred.
CCTV footage from the temple premises and videos recorded by devotees could also play an important role in establishing the sequence of events. Investigators may examine whether an assault took place and what preceded the alleged slapping.
Reports indicate that Aishwarya has not been detained or served a notice so far. Police are expected to consider the complaint, available evidence and applicable legal provisions before deciding on further action.
Incident Raises Questions Over Temple Security
The controversy has also brought attention to the challenges faced by police personnel during major religious gatherings. Officers deployed at temples are responsible for managing crowds, regulating access and ensuring that security arrangements are followed.
Disagreements over entry and access can become difficult to manage when thousands of devotees are present. However, allegations of assault and obstruction of a police officer performing official duties have given the Mandya case wider significance.
The incident has also prompted discussion about VIP access and whether political connections should influence security arrangements at public religious places.
For now, both sides have presented different accounts of the confrontation. The investigation, including witness statements and examination of available video evidence, is expected to establish what happened at the temple.
No conviction has been recorded in the case, and the accused remains entitled to due process. Further developments will depend on the findings of the police investigation.
