A tragic Karnataka road accident claimed the lives of five people after the car they were travelling in rammed into a parked lorry near Tumkurlahalli Bridge in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district on Thursday night.
The deceased were identified as Raghu (40), Rudresh (36), Pramod (35), Somashekar (35), and Mallikarjun. Police officials confirmed that all five victims died on the spot due to the severity of the impact.
According to the police, the victims were returning to Challakere after attending a Bakrid feast at a friend’s house in Molakalmuru. The group was travelling in a Tata Indigo car when the accident occurred around 9 pm near a roadside dhaba close to Tumkurlahalli Bridge.
Preliminary investigation suggests that one of the tyres of the vehicle allegedly burst while the car was moving at high speed. Investigators believe the tyre burst caused the driver to lose control before the vehicle crashed into a lorry parked on the roadside.
“The driver appears to have lost control of the vehicle after the tyre burst, following which the car crashed into a lorry parked by the roadside. All five occupants died on the spot due to the impact,” a police officer said.
The Karnataka road accident triggered panic in the area, with local residents and passersby rushing to the spot after hearing a loud crash. Witnesses said the front portion of the car was completely damaged due to the impact with the parked lorry.
People nearby immediately alerted the police and emergency services. However, due to the seriousness of the collision, all five occupants had already succumbed to their injuries before rescue teams could arrive.
Police personnel from the Molakalmuru police station reached the accident spot soon after receiving information about the incident. Senior officials also visited the scene and conducted an inspection as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities confirmed that Pramod, one of the deceased, was a two-time councillor elected from the Janata Dal (Secular) in the Challakere City Municipal Council. His death has shocked local political circles, party workers, and residents in the region.
Several local leaders and residents expressed grief over the incident and offered condolences to the families of the victims. Friends and relatives described the deceased as well-known individuals in their communities.
The bodies were later shifted to a nearby government hospital for post-mortem examination. Family members of the victims gathered at the hospital after being informed about the fatal accident.
Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. Officials are also examining whether the parked lorry had proper safety indicators or warning signs placed on the road.
Road safety experts have repeatedly raised concerns over vehicles being parked carelessly on highways and roads without proper reflectors, especially during night hours. Such situations often increase the risk of deadly accidents.
Tyre burst-related crashes are also a growing concern on Indian roads. Experts advise vehicle owners to regularly inspect tyre condition, maintain proper air pressure, and avoid over-speeding, particularly during long-distance travel.
In recent years, Karnataka has witnessed several fatal highway accidents involving parked heavy vehicles and speeding cars during night travel. Traffic authorities have been urging drivers to remain cautious while travelling on highways, especially in low-visibility conditions.
