PM Modi at the 3rd India-Nordic Summit upgrades India-Nordic ties to a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership. Trade has grown four-fold; cooperation will span clean energy, defence, digital tech and more.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that India’s partnership with the five Nordic countries Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark is being upgraded to a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership. The announcement came at the conclusion of the 3rd India-Nordic Summit, where PM Modi addressed a joint press meet alongside the leaders of all five Nordic nations.
Speaking at the summit, PM Modi said India and the Nordic region are uniquely positioned to build trusted global solutions for the future by combining Nordic expertise in sustainability with India’s scale and capacity for implementation.
TRADE AND INVESTMENT: A DECADE OF STEADY GROWTH
PM Modi highlighted the remarkable growth in India-Nordic economic ties over the past decade. Trade between India and the Nordic bloc has grown four-fold, while investments from Nordic countries into India have surged by approximately 200 per cent. The Prime Minister noted that this growth has not only contributed to India’s development but has also created meaningful employment opportunities within Nordic countries — making the relationship mutually beneficial.
WHAT THE UPGRADED PARTNERSHIP WILL FOCUS ON
The upgraded strategic partnership will leverage the distinct strengths of each Nordic nation:
Iceland Geothermal energy and fisheries Norway Blue economy and Arctic affairs Sweden Advanced manufacturing and defence Finland Telecommunications and digital technologies Denmark Cybersecurity and health technologies
Beyond sectoral focus areas, cooperation is being strengthened at universities, laboratories, and start-up ecosystems to accelerate research, skill development, and talent mobility between the two sides.
“SAMBANDH” A SHARED WORD, A SHARED VISION
PM Modi noted that the word “Sambandh” meaning relations is common to both Indian and Nordic languages, and expressed hope this shared connection would reflect in deeper ties going forward.
NORDIC LEADERS REAFFIRM SHARED VALUES
The Nordic leaders reaffirmed their commitment to democracy and a rules-based global order, called for stronger cooperation with India in addressing global challenges including ongoing conflicts, and backed reforms in multilateral institutions.
INDIA’S POSITION ON GLOBAL CONFLICTS
PM Modi reiterated India’s consistent position calling for cessation of hostilities in Ukraine and West Asia, and underlined that India and the Nordic countries share an unambiguous zero-tolerance stance against terrorism with no room for double standards.
