RAIRANGPUR, ODISHA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday underscored the growing role of tribal Empowerment in India’s development journey, stating that years of neglect are gradually being replaced by opportunities in education, healthcare, infrastructure and economic empowerment.
Addressing a massive public gathering in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, the Prime Minister said the government’s focused welfare policies and grassroots outreach initiatives have enabled tribal populations to become active contributors to the nation’s progress. His remarks came during a special event marking two years of the BJP-led government under Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
The visit carried both political and developmental significance, as the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects worth approximately ₹47,600 crore across multiple sectors, including transportation, energy, industry, water resources and public infrastructure. The projects are expected to boost economic activity, improve connectivity and generate employment opportunities across Odisha. Recent government announcements had identified the event as a major milestone in the state’s infrastructure expansion agenda.
Tribal communities in Odisha Linked to Purvodaya Vision
Highlighting the Centre’s long-term vision for eastern India, Modi reiterated the importance of the Purvodaya strategy, which aims to accelerate development in states that have historically lagged behind western and southern regions in industrial growth. He described Odisha as a crucial pillar in this vision, citing its natural resources, skilled youth population and strategic location.
The Prime Minister also praised the Mohan Charan Majhi government for its governance initiatives over the past two years. He noted that Odisha has witnessed significant progress in welfare delivery, women’s empowerment, healthcare coverage and infrastructure development since the BJP assumed power in the state. Government data released during the anniversary celebrations highlighted achievements in social welfare, health insurance coverage and educational reforms.
President Murmu’s Journey Reflects Tribal Empowerment in Odisha
A major highlight of the event was the presence of President Droupadi Murmu, whose roots are closely connected to Mayurbhanj district. Extending birthday wishes to the President, Modi described her journey from a tribal family in Odisha to the country’s highest constitutional office as an inspiration for millions across India.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister visited Pahadpur, the President’s ancestral village, and announced plans to transform it into a “Surya Gram” powered by renewable energy. The proposed initiative will focus on clean energy adoption, sustainable infrastructure and modern civic amenities, positioning the village as a model for rural development.
The announcement aligns with the Centre’s broader push toward renewable energy and sustainable rural growth. Officials indicated that the project would integrate solar-powered public infrastructure and community facilities while promoting environmentally friendly development practices.
Political observers view the Prime Minister’s visit as a reflection of the increasing importance of Odisha in the BJP’s national development and electoral strategy. The joint appearance of Prime Minister Modi and President Murmu at the event was particularly notable, symbolizing both the region’s tribal identity and its growing prominence in national policymaking.
Tribal Empowerment in Odisha to Drive Future Growth
With large-scale investments, renewed focus on tribal welfare and ambitious infrastructure plans, the event reinforced the government’s message that eastern India and particularly Odisha will play a central role in the country’s next phase of economic growth.
As Odisha enters the third year of the Majhi administration, the success of these projects and welfare initiatives will likely shape the state’s development trajectory and strengthen its position within India’s evolving growth story.
