Gurugram Court Sends Punjab Minister to Judicial Custody in Sanjeev Arora GST Fraud Case Investigation

Gurugram: In a massive setback for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab, a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Gurugram on Monday remanded Punjab Industries Minister Sanjeev Arora to judicial custody until June 1. The decision came directly after the expiry of his custodial remand with the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which has been rigorously probing a multi-crore money laundering angle tied to a suspected multi-layered tax evasion racket.

The high-profile legal development in the Sanjeev Arora GST fraud case has triggered an intense political slugfest between the AAP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led central government, escalating geopolitical friction across state borders.

ED Unveils Dubious Shell Network and Export Scams

the federal probe agency has leveled serious financial allegations against the senior politician. The central investigation revolves around a real estate firm, Hampton Sky Realty Limited (HSRL), where the minister allegedly functioned as a key beneficial operator and decision maker. The enforcement directorate claims that the real estate enterprise deliberately used an intricate network of non-existent shell companies to fabricate transaction trails.
According to investigative findings submitted before the special court, these front companies were actively utilized to show bogus domestic purchases and highly inflated mobile phone exports to overseas destinations, primarily based in Dubai.
The financial magnitude of these fake operations is estimated to be worth over ₹157 crore.Agency sources stated that fake purchase invoices were systematically generated from non existing entities to illegally claim hefty Input Tax Credit (ITC) refunds. Furthermore, out of the total documented transactions, goods valued at over ₹102 crore were allegedly routed to two specific United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based firms merely on paper to disguise the illicit influx of funds into the Indian banking channel as legitimate corporate revenue.

Political Backlash and AAP’s Defiant Stance

The intense legal action in the Sanjeev Arora GST fraud case has drawn fierce condemnation from the top brass of the Aam Aadmi Party. Senior AAP leaders have completely rejected the financial misappropriation allegations, terming the entire operational crackdown as absolute political persecution orchestrated by the BJP led central government to destabilize opposition led states.
Praising the Cabinet Minister’s unwavering loyalty to the party cadre, senior leadership claimed that the central investigative machineries are being deliberately weaponized to tarnish clean political images ahead of crucial legislative developments. The party has reiterated full faith in the judiciary, claiming the minister will emerge completely vindicated from what they describe as a manufactured corporate controversy.

High Court Challenge and Upcoming Legal Course

The minister was initially taken into custody by federal officials on May 9 following extensive raids at his official residence in Chandigarh. As per reports, the local defense counsels have actively challenged the initial arrest protocol in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The defense petition strongly alleges extensive procedural violations and an absolute lack of prima facie evidence by the investigating officers before initiating the enforcement arrest.
With the Gurugram court formalizing the transition from active agency interrogation to judicial custody, the minister will remain lodged in correctional facilities till early June. Legal experts indicate that the upcoming weeks will remain critical as defense teams prepare extensive bail applications, while federal agencies look to decode deeper operational trails within the complex case.

Conclusion

The Sanjeev Arora GST fraud case has intensified the legal and political heat in Punjab. With the minister now in judicial custody over a ₹157 crore money laundering probe, all eyes remain on the Punjab and Haryana High Court to see if his procedural challenge will grant him immediate relief.
