Amit Shah Hits Out at Opposition

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has strongly criticised opposition parties after the Women’s Reservation constitutional amendment failed to pass in the Lok Sabha, calling it an “insult to Nari Shakti”.

Shah accused parties including Congress, TMC, DMK, and Samajwadi Party of blocking a crucial reform aimed at granting 33% reservation to women in legislatures.

“Beyond Imagination and Reprehensible”

In a sharp post, Shah said the opposition not only rejected the bill but also celebrated its failure.

He described the move as “reprehensible” and said it reflects a mindset that is neither in the interest of women nor the country.

Why the Bill Failed

The proposed constitutional amendment, part of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, failed despite receiving more votes in favour than against.

  • Votes in favour: 298
  • Votes against: 230

However, constitutional amendments require a two-thirds majority of members present and voting.

Out of 528 votes cast, the bill needed 352 votes to pass — falling short of the required threshold.

What the Bill Proposed

The legislation aimed to provide 33% reservation for women in:

  • Lok Sabha
  • State Assemblies

It also proposed increasing Lok Sabha seats to 850 to accommodate the reservation before the 2029 elections.

Opposition’s Stand

Opposition leaders argued that they support women’s reservation but opposed linking it with delimitation.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticised the move, calling it an attempt to alter India’s electoral map rather than empower women.

Political Fallout

Amit Shah warned that the opposition would face backlash from women voters across the country in upcoming elections.

“The wrath of women will be seen at every level,” he said, signalling that the issue could become a major political flashpoint ahead of future polls.
