Krishnanagar: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra was targeted with eggs and brinjals by a group of protesters at a party workers’ meeting at an eatery in Krishnanagar on Wednesday, becoming the latest victim of what has emerged as a recurring pattern of protests against TMC leaders in West Bengal following the party’s defeat in the Assembly elections.
The Mahua Moitra egg attack Krishnanagar incident was broadcast live on Facebook by Moitra herself, who accused “BJP goons” of carrying out the attack while she held the meeting with party workers inside the building. In the video, Moitra could be seen protecting herself with a curtain as the mob continued to throw eggs and brinjals towards the window from outside.
“This is the law-and-order situation in the state. None of these people are ordinary citizens; they are BJP goons,” the Lok Sabha MP from Krishnanagar said during the live broadcast.
Mahua Moitra Egg Attack Krishnanagar: What Happened
A group of protesters gathered outside the building in Krishnanagar where Moitra was holding the party meeting, waving black flags and raising “go back” slogans before throwing eggs and brinjals at the premises. Moitra said police and CRPF arrived at the spot only after 15 minutes, despite her repeated calls for assistance.
“I have called the DGP and everybody else, but the police are sitting and watching. I want all of India to see this. The CRPF is not being able to disperse the crowd,” Moitra said in the live video.
She also warned that despite the faces of the protesters being clearly visible in footage, the police would later claim they could not identify them, a remark that underscored her frustration with the law-and-order response to the incident. The TMC MP declined police protection and refused to leave the building, saying, “This is my area. I am the MP from here. I am not going to move.
“Later, she posted another video on social media platform X, tagging the Bengal police chief and accusing the police of watching the mob without dispersing it for over two hours. “They want me to flee, and they will pelt eggs and stones while I enter my car,” she wrote.
Calcutta High Court Pulls Up Bengal Government on Same Day
The Mahua Moitra egg attack Krishnanagar incident came on the same day the Calcutta High Court pulled up the BJP-led Bengal government over the spate of egg-hurling incidents against TMC leaders across the state. The court described hurling eggs at politicians as a social evil that has become normalised in the current political climate, and directed the Bengal government to rein in such incidents.
The court asked the government to file a report detailing the number of arrests and actions taken against those accused of hurling eggs at political figures. The directions came on a plea filed by TMC leader and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee, who was among the first high-profile targets of the trend when protesters threw eggs at him in May as he visited families affected by post-poll violence, forcing him to wear a cricket helmet to protect himself.
The Pattern of Egg Attacks on TMC Leaders
The egg attacks on TMC leaders began in the weeks following the Bengal Assembly election results, with public anger against the party intensifying amid allegations of corruption and post-poll violence against opposition workers. Since Abhishek Banerjee was first targeted in May, over a dozen TMC MLAs and leaders have faced similar protests.
The Mahua Moitra egg attack Krishnanagar is part of this broader pattern of grassroots anger directed at TMC leadership, with chants of “chor, chor” and the hurling of eggs becoming recurring features of protests against party figures across the state. The TMC has accused the BJP of orchestrating these incidents, while the BJP has described them as spontaneous expressions of public anger at years of alleged TMC corruption and misrule.
Earlier this month, Moitra had narrowly avoided a similar incident on June 13, when BJP Mahila Morcha workers reportedly gathered outside the Krishnanagar court with eggs and tomatoes ahead of her appearance in connection with a case. She did not turn up to court that day. Wednesday’s incident marks the first time she was directly targeted in such a protest.
