Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan formally restored Kharge’s status as Leader of Opposition with effect from June 26, after the Congress president was re-elected to the Upper House from Karnataka and took oath as MP.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has been reappointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha after taking oath as a Member of Parliament following his re-election to the Upper House from Karnataka. The recognition was granted by Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan with effect from June 26, in accordance with the provisions of the Salary and Allowances of Leaders of Opposition in Parliament Act, 1977.
Why Kharge’s Reappointment Was Necessary
Kharge’s earlier term as a Rajya Sabha member ended on June 25, which automatically brought his tenure as Leader of the Opposition to a close. Following his successful re-election to the Upper House, the Chairman formally restored his status, ensuring continuity in the Congress party’s leadership in the Rajya Sabha.
The oath of office was administered in the chamber of the Rajya Sabha Chairman. After taking the oath, Kharge expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue serving in the Upper House and described the responsibility as both an honour and a significant commitment. He also thanked the Rajya Sabha Chairman, Deputy Chairman and members of his party for their continued trust and support.
Kharge Reaffirms Commitment to Constitutional Values
In his remarks after the reappointment, Kharge reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding constitutional values and strengthening parliamentary democracy. He said he would continue to raise issues concerning the public and work closely with opposition parties to ensure meaningful debates and effective scrutiny of government policies during Parliament sessions.
