The Central Government has intensified its campaign against narcotics trafficking and substance abuse with Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiling a comprehensive roadmap aimed at building a Drug-Free India. Chairing the 10th Apex-Level Meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD) in New Delhi, Shah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminating the drug menace through stronger enforcement, better coordination among agencies, and large-scale rehabilitation efforts.
The high-level meeting brought together representatives from central ministries, state governments, law enforcement agencies, and anti-narcotics authorities to review progress and discuss future strategies. Officials examined measures to strengthen coordination among stakeholders and improve intelligence-sharing mechanisms to tackle increasingly sophisticated drug trafficking networks operating across the country.
Vision Document Charts Roadmap for Drug-Free India
A major highlight of the meeting was the release of the Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026-2029). The document outlines a multi-pronged strategy focused on demand reduction, supply reduction, rehabilitation, public awareness, and institutional strengthening. It also addresses emerging threats such as synthetic drugs, online trafficking networks, and darknet-based narcotics transactions.
Speaking at the event, Amit Shah said that narcotics trafficking is not merely a law-and-order issue but a serious challenge affecting national security, social stability, and the future of the country’s youth. He called upon all states and agencies to work together and share information more effectively to dismantle drug syndicates and prevent the spread of substance abuse.
The Home Minister also released the NCB Annual Report 2025 and inaugurated newly established Narcotics Control Bureau zonal offices in Jammu and Guwahati. These offices are expected to strengthen enforcement capabilities in strategically important regions and improve operational coordination in combating drug-related crimes.
Massive Narcotics Disposal Drive Launched Nationwide
As part of the government’s nationwide anti-drug campaign, Amit Shah launched the Online Drug Disposal Fortnight Campaign. Under the initiative, more than 2.09 lakh kilograms of seized narcotic substances, valued at nearly ₹6,000 crore, are scheduled to be destroyed following legal procedures by various central and state agencies.
The campaign reflects the government’s focus on ensuring that confiscated drugs are disposed of efficiently and do not re-enter illegal supply chains. Officials believe that large-scale disposal drives send a strong message to drug trafficking networks and demonstrate the government’s resolve to combat narcotics-related crimes.
India has witnessed a significant increase in anti-narcotics operations in recent years, with enforcement agencies reporting record seizures of heroin, synthetic drugs, methamphetamine, and other illegal substances. Authorities have also intensified efforts to monitor coastal routes, international borders, and digital platforms increasingly used by traffickers.
The NCORD mechanism was established to improve coordination among various departments and agencies involved in narcotics control. Over the years, it has evolved into a key platform for formulating policy responses and ensuring cooperation between central and state authorities. The latest meeting reviewed achievements under existing programmes and discussed strategies to achieve more effective implementation over the next three years.
Officials said the Vision Document 2026-29 will serve as a guiding framework for strengthening institutions, improving enforcement mechanisms, enhancing rehabilitation facilities, and creating greater public awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. The roadmap aligns with the government’s broader objective of protecting young people from addiction and ensuring safer communities across the country.
With the launch of the new strategy and large-scale disposal campaign, the government has signalled a renewed push toward achieving the goal of a Drug-Free India, combining enforcement, prevention, rehabilitation, and community participation to tackle the narcotics challenge from multiple fronts.
