Amazon has confirmed a fresh Amazon India investment of $48 billion through 2030, one of the largest commitments by a global technology company to the country’s digital economy. The announcement followed a meeting between Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday. The revised figure significantly raises the company’s earlier projection and signals continued confidence in India’s long-term growth story, even as competition among global technology investors in the country intensifies.
Amazon India Investment Sharpens Focus on AI and Cloud
Of the total commitment, Jassy said more than $21 billion would go toward cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure between 2026 and 2030, including a new $13 billion addition unveiled during Thursday’s meeting. The funding will expand Amazon Web Services data centres in Mumbai and Hyderabad, giving Indian startups, enterprises and government bodies greater access to AI chips, managed cloud services and developer tools.
Jassy noted that Amazon had earlier set aside $35 billion for the same period before scaling the figure upward in response to stronger-than-expected demand across its e-commerce, AI and cloud businesses in the country. He said the company’s India operations have shown a strong growth trajectory over the past year, particularly in cloud adoption among enterprises and government departments.
Jobs, Exports and Small Business Support
The company has tied its spending to measurable economic outcomes. By 2030, Amazon expects to support 3.8 million jobs, directly and through its wider seller and logistics network, while enabling $80 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports from India.
Amazon also plans to extend AI tools to 15 million small and medium businesses and introduce AI-based learning for 4 million students in government schools, widening its digital push beyond metro markets into smaller towns. The company said these targets build on commitments it made roughly a year ago, which it is now revising upward as adoption accelerates faster than initially anticipated.
A Decade of Investment in India’s Digital Economy
Amazon’s latest pledge builds on nearly $40 billion already invested in India since 2010, spanning logistics, cloud infrastructure and seller support programmes. The company says it has digitised 12 million small businesses, enabled over $20 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports, and supported 2.8 million jobs through its operations so far.
Amazon has also trained more than 10 million Indians in cloud computing skills over the years, a programme it intends to expand as demand for AI and cloud talent grows across the country alongside the broader push toward digital literacy.
Expansion of Logistics and Delivery Network
This year alone, Amazon plans to open more than 20 new fulfilment centres and over 100 additional last-mile delivery stations, with particular emphasis on tier 3 and tier 4 towns. The company said the goal is to offer delivery ranging from minutes to next-day across every pin code in India.
A new welfare initiative called Sammaan will support delivery associates through scholarships for their children’s education, insurance coverage, on-road safety measures, and an expansion of rest centres to 250 locations this year, reflecting a growing emphasis on workforce welfare within the logistics sector.
Why Global Tech Majors Are Betting on India
Industry observers view Amazon’s expanded commitment as part of a broader pattern of global technology companies deepening their presence in India, drawn by a large consumer base, improving digital infrastructure and supportive government policy. India remains among the fastest-growing markets for cloud services and online retail, with rising smartphone usage and expanding rural internet access continuing to widen the addressable market for firms operating in e-commerce, cloud computing and enterprise technology.
Modi Welcomes the Announcement
Reacting on social media, Prime Minister Modi said the investment would create fresh opportunities for India’s youth and reflected growing global confidence in the country’s economic potential. Jassy, for his part, credited Modi’s leadership over the past decade for fostering an environment that encouraged large-scale technology investment, calling the Prime Minister’s vision for the country’s development remarkable.
Conclusion
With this expanded Amazon India investment, the company reinforces its position as one of the largest global technology investors in the country while reaffirming its focus on AI-led growth, job creation and digital inclusion through the rest of the decade. The announcement is likely to be read as a fresh signal of global technology firms’ growing confidence in India’s digital economy and its expanding role in the worldwide AI and cloud computing landscape.
