The Meghalaya High Court dismissed the state government’s appeal challenging bail granted to Sonam Raghuwanshi, accused of murdering her husband Raja Raghuwanshi during their honeymoon in May 2025. The criminal trial will continue.

The Meghalaya High Court on Monday upheld the Shillong court’s order granting bail to Sonam Raghuwanshi, the prime accused in the alleged murder of her husband Raja Raghuwanshi during their honeymoon trip to Meghalaya in May 2025. A bench of the High Court dismissed the Meghalaya state government’s appeal that sought cancellation of the bail, which had been granted by the Shillong trial court in April 2026.

Why Sonam Raghuwanshi Was Granted Bail

The Shillong court had granted bail to Sonam Raghuwanshi primarily on the ground that the investigating agency had allegedly failed to properly communicate the grounds of her arrest a procedural lapse that the trial court held had prejudiced her defence.

The Meghalaya government challenged this order before the High Court, arguing that the trial court’s findings were erroneous and seeking cancellation of the relief granted to the accused. The High Court reserved its verdict earlier this month after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence over several days, before delivering its ruling on Monday.

Meghalaya High Court Upholds Bail – What the Ruling Means

By dismissing the state government’s appeal, the Meghalaya High Court has effectively affirmed the procedural reasoning of the Shillong trial court that an arrested person’s right to be informed of the grounds of arrest is a fundamental safeguard, and its violation can have consequences on the legality of custody.

However, the High Court’s ruling does not amount to an acquittal or a finding of innocence. The criminal trial in the alleged murder case will continue, and Sonam Raghuwanshi remains the prime accused. A detailed copy of the High Court’s judgment is yet to be made available.

The Honeymoon Murder Case Background

The case attracted nationwide attention when Raja Raghuwanshi died under suspicious circumstances during the couple’s honeymoon trip to Meghalaya in May 2025. Sonam Raghuwanshi was subsequently arrested and named the prime accused in his alleged murder.

The case has been closely followed across the country due to its unusual circumstances – a young couple on honeymoon, a death that raised immediate questions, and a subsequent investigation that pointed to the spouse as the primary suspect.
