PM Modi Melbourne Visit Highlights Growing India-Australia Partnership
Addressing a packed audience, Prime Minister Modi recalled interacting with members of the Indian community earlier in Sydney and said he had eagerly looked forward to meeting the vibrant Indian diaspora in Melbourne as well. Referring to the overwhelming response from the audience, he described the gathering as “houseful” and a “blockbuster,” reflecting the deep emotional bond between India and its overseas community.
Mr Modi also acknowledged the Traditional Owners of the land and paid tribute to their Elders—past, present and emerging—before beginning his address.
Highlighting the progress in bilateral relations, the Prime Minister noted that his first visit to Australia in 2014 came after a gap of 28 years since the last visit by an Indian Prime Minister. He said his current trip is his third visit to Australia in the past 12 years, calling it a “hat-trick” that symbolises the rapidly strengthening partnership between the two countries.
Shared Values and Cricket Strengthen Bilateral Relations
Prime Minister Modi underlined the unique cultural and sporting connections shared by India and Australia. Referring to Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium and the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), he said both cities represent the deep passion for cricket that unites the people of the two nations.
He also praised Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, saying his warmth and goodwill have won the hearts of the Indian community. According to Mr Modi, the growing friendship between the leadership of both countries has further strengthened bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
Addressing the event, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the gathering as a reflection of the strong Australia-India partnership. He said the enthusiasm displayed by people from both countries demonstrates the positive momentum in bilateral relations and the shared commitment to deeper cooperation.
The India-Australia relationship has witnessed remarkable growth over the past decade, expanding well beyond traditional diplomatic engagement. Both countries now cooperate closely in areas such as trade, defence, maritime security, critical minerals, education, clean energy, technology and the Indo-Pacific strategy. The signing of the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) in recent years has also boosted bilateral trade and investment while creating new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
Indian Diaspora Continues to Play a Key Role
The Indian community has emerged as one of Australia’s fastest-growing and most influential migrant communities, contributing significantly to education, healthcare, technology, entrepreneurship and public service. The diaspora has played an important role in strengthening people-to-people ties and has become a vital bridge between the two democracies.
Over the years, Prime Minister Modi has consistently engaged with Indian communities during his overseas visits, describing them as “national ambassadors” who contribute to India’s global image while strengthening cultural and economic relations with partner countries.
Concluding his address, Prime Minister Modi reiterated that India’s development journey is driven by confidence, innovation and aspirations. He said the country’s progress towards Viksit Bharat is creating new opportunities not only for Indians at home but also for the global Indian diaspora. The PM Modi Melbourne Visit is expected to further deepen the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and reinforce cooperation across trade, education, innovation, defence and people-to-people exchanges in the years ahead.
