Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred the Bintang Adipurna, the highest civilian honour of the Republic of Indonesia, in recognition of his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding strategic cooperation between the two countries. The honour has been widely welcomed by senior members of the Union Government, who described it as a proud moment for India and a reflection of the country’s growing global stature.
External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar said the conferment of the Bintang Adipurna is a matter of immense pride for every Indian. In a social media post, he stated that the honour recognises Prime Minister Modi’s consistent efforts to deepen the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership while strengthening India’s engagement with ASEAN.
Bintang Adipurna Recognises Strong India-Indonesia Partnership
Instituted in 1959, the Bintang Adipurna, also known as the Star of the Republic of Indonesia, is the country’s highest civilian decoration. It is awarded to individuals who have rendered exceptional service towards the unity, continuity and prosperity of the Republic of Indonesia.
Dr Jaishankar noted that the honour reflects the close and expanding relationship between India and Indonesia, which has grown significantly in areas such as defence, maritime security, trade, connectivity, digital cooperation and regional diplomacy.
The recognition also highlights India’s increasing role in promoting peace, stability and economic cooperation across the Indo-Pacific region through partnerships with ASEAN member countries.
This recognition adds to the growing list of international honours received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the past decade. He has been conferred several prestigious civilian awards by countries including France, the United States, Russia, Egypt, Greece, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bhutan, Nigeria and Dominica, reflecting India’s expanding diplomatic engagement and strengthening global partnerships under his leadership.
Union Ministers Congratulate Prime Minister Modi
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated Prime Minister Modi, describing the award as a powerful acknowledgement of his visionary leadership and transformative statesmanship. In his message, Mr Singh said the honour reflects the Prime Minister’s commitment to advancing India’s national interests while strengthening global partnerships built on mutual trust, respect and shared progress.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also congratulated the Prime Minister, calling the recognition a proud moment for the nation. He observed that India and Indonesia share centuries-old civilisational and maritime links that have evolved into a modern strategic partnership based on trust, cooperation and common interests.
Mr Pradhan further said Indonesia remains one of India’s most important partners within ASEAN and continues to play a central role in India’s vision for a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. According to him, the award reflects the enduring strength of this longstanding friendship.
India and Indonesia have shared close cultural and commercial ties for centuries, dating back to ancient maritime trade routes and the spread of Indian civilisation across Southeast Asia. In recent years, bilateral relations have expanded considerably through cooperation in defence, maritime security, digital economy, energy, infrastructure, education and disaster management. Both countries also work closely through regional forums such as the East Asia Summit, G20 and ASEAN-led mechanisms.
The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Indonesia has gained momentum through regular high-level visits, stronger defence cooperation and growing economic engagement. Both nations have also collaborated on ensuring a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific while enhancing maritime connectivity and regional stability.
The conferment of the Bintang Adipurna on Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being viewed as another milestone in the growing partnership between the two countries. The recognition underscores the importance Indonesia places on its relationship with India and reinforces the shared commitment of both nations to deepen cooperation across strategic, economic and cultural sectors while contributing to regional peace and prosperity.
