In a major escalation of post-poll violence in West Bengal, five security personnel, including senior police officials and central forces, sustained gunshot wounds in the Baman Gheri area on Wednesday. The incident occurred as the team was investigating reports of localized unrest following the recent Assembly election results
As per reports, the joint team of West Bengal Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) came under fire in the Sarberia-Agarhati Gram Panchayat area. The injured have been identified as Bharat Purkait, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nazat Police Station, Bhaswat Goswami, an officer from the Rajbari outpost, a woman constable, and two CRPF personnel.
The victims were initially rushed to Minakha Rural Hospital for emergency care. Due to the severity of the bullet injuries, they were later transferred to specialized medical facilities in Kolkata for further treatment.
Arms and Explosives Recovered
Following the ambush, a massive search operation was launched in the vicinity. Authorities recovered a significant cache of illegal firearms and crude bombs from the site. As per reports, the violence appears linked to disputes over the control of local “bheris” (fish farming reservoirs), a long-standing point of contention in the region.
Political Face-off
The attack comes just a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a historic victory in the state, winning 207 seats to topple the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. Sandeshkhali, once a bastion of the TMC, saw the BJP’s Sanat Sardar emerge victorious in the 2026 polls.
BJP leadership has pointed fingers at TMC-linked miscreants for the ambush, while rival claims suggest the violence may have stemmed from internal factional clashes within the local TMC units. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has maintained a “zero tolerance” stance on post-poll violence, directing the State Chief Secretary and DGP to ensure immediate stability.
Additional forces have been deployed to Sandeshkhali to prevent further flare-ups, and four individuals have been arrested in connection with the shooting so far.
