Health authorities report over 1,200 confirmed Ebola cases and 321 deaths as the World Health Organization calls for continued vigilance amid shortages of medical supplies.
Kinshasa: The DR Congo Ebola Outbreak continues to pose a major public health challenge, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo reporting more than 1,200 confirmed cases since the outbreak was declared in mid-May. According to the latest figures released by the country’s public health authorities, 1,203 confirmed cases have been recorded, including 321 deaths.
Health officials said 148 patients have recovered from the disease, while 419 people remain in isolation or are receiving treatment at hospitals and designated healthcare facilities. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as efforts to contain the spread of the virus remain underway.
DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Cases Continue to Rise
According to official data, the outbreak has also resulted in 265 suspected Ebola cases, including 77 suspected deaths. Health authorities are continuing investigations to confirm these cases while strengthening surveillance and response measures in affected areas.
The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus and was officially declared on May 15. Public health teams have intensified efforts to identify infections early, isolate patients, and prevent further transmission within communities.
Officials stated that continuous monitoring and rapid medical intervention remain essential to controlling the spread of the disease.
WHO Says Response Is Improving but Risks Remain
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that response efforts have shown encouraging signs in recent weeks.
According to the WHO, contact tracing teams are successfully reaching a growing number of people who may have been exposed to infected individuals. The organization also noted that increasing numbers of patients are recovering and returning home after receiving treatment.
Despite these positive developments, Tedros cautioned that the outbreak is far from over and urged authorities and international partners to continue supporting response efforts until transmission is brought under control.
Shortage of Medicines and Isolation Centres Raises Concern
Health authorities have reported significant shortages of essential medicines, infection prevention supplies, and medical equipment needed to manage the outbreak effectively.
Officials also highlighted the lack of around 20 isolation centres required to accommodate patients and prevent further community transmission. These shortages have created additional challenges for healthcare workers responding to the emergency.
Experts say adequate medical supplies, trained personnel, and properly equipped treatment facilities remain critical for reducing infections and improving patient outcomes during an Ebola outbreak.
Public Health Measures Continue Across Affected Areas
Authorities have continued implementing several public health measures aimed at limiting the spread of the virus.
These include contact tracing, patient isolation, community awareness campaigns, surveillance activities, and treatment of confirmed cases. Health workers are also educating communities about symptoms, early reporting, and preventive practices to reduce the risk of transmission.
International health agencies are working alongside Congolese authorities to strengthen outbreak response capacity and provide technical and logistical support where required.
DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Remains a Global Health Concern
The DR Congo Ebola Outbreak remains one of the most closely monitored public health emergencies in the region. While the increasing number of recoveries offers hope, the continued rise in confirmed and suspected cases highlights the need for sustained medical response and international cooperation.
Health officials have urged communities to remain vigilant and follow public health guidance as containment efforts continue. With healthcare teams working to expand treatment capacity and improve access to essential supplies, authorities hope to slow transmission and protect vulnerable populations in the weeks ahead.
