The Indian government has officially appointed Shashi Shekhar Vempati as the new Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). A distinguished IIT Bombay alumnus and Padma Shri awardee, Vempati will head the censor board for a three-year honorary term.
Transition of Leadership
Vempati succeeds renowned lyricist Prason Joshi, who held the position since 2017. Joshi, whose tenure saw significant shifts in film certification, now moves on following his significant tenure, having been appointed as Chairman of Prasar Bharati previously.
A Focus on Digital Adaptation
The new chairperson brings immense experience in media technology, having previously served as the CEO of Prasar Bharati. During his tenure there, he was credited with driving substantial digital upgrades and modernizing the public broadcaster’s infrastructure. Additionally, as a co-founder of AI4India.Org, his background is expected to bring a technical perspective to the regulatory body.
Peers and industry experts have congratulated Vempati, noting that his expertise in technology is ideal for addressing the complexities of film regulation in the booming OTT (Over-The-Top) and digital media era.
