A fast-track court in Uttar Pradesh has delivered a strong verdict in the Home Guard murder case, sentencing the convicted man to death. The court ruled that the 2020 killing of Home Guard Ratiram in Muzaffarnagar fell under the “rarest of rare” category, making capital punishment the only fitting response to what it described as a brutal attack on a man performing his duty.

Court Verdict in the Home Guard Murder Case

Fast Track Court Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar pronounced the death sentence against the accused, identified as Deepak, under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. Alongside capital punishment, the court imposed a fine of ₹1.20 lakh on the convict, closing out a trial that had stretched across several years since the crime first came to light.

The judge observed that the circumstances surrounding the crime justified the highest possible punishment under Indian law. In the written order, the court noted that the brutality of the assault and the victim’s status as an on-duty public servant weighed heavily in reaching this conclusion. As per legal procedure, the death sentence cannot be carried out until it receives confirmation from the Allahabad High Court, which will now examine the case in detail before any further action follows.

Details of the Home Guard Murder Case

The case dates back to June 4, 2020, when Home Guard Ratiram was on official duty near the Budhana Model locality, under the jurisdiction of the Kotwali police station in Muzaffarnagar district. Prosecutors said Ratiram stepped in after witnessing Deepak allegedly assaulting his own mother during a heated domestic altercation in the area.

His decision to intervene reportedly angered the accused, who turned on him and attacked him with a knife in a sudden and violent outburst. Ratiram suffered severe injuries in the assault and was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but doctors were unable to save him, and he later succumbed to his wounds, leaving the local community in shock.

Investigation and Trial

Following Ratiram’s death, local police registered a murder case and arrested Deepak soon after the attack. Investigators gathered evidence, recorded witness statements and completed a detailed inquiry before filing a chargesheet, setting the stage for a lengthy court process that would take years to conclude.

During the proceedings, the prosecution presented witness testimonies along with supporting evidence to establish the accused’s role in the killing. The defence had the opportunity to contest the charges, but the court examined all the material placed before it and concluded that guilt had been proved beyond reasonable doubt, paving the way for sentencing.

A Verdict Highlighting Protection for Public Servants

The court’s ruling in this Home Guard murder case reflects the judiciary’s firm stance against violence targeting law enforcement personnel and public servants performing their official duties. Ratiram had stepped in during a family dispute, an act of intervention that ultimately cost him his life while he was on duty and trying to prevent further harm.

Legal experts note that cases involving the murder of on-duty officials often draw stricter judicial scrutiny, given the broader implications for public safety and the rule of law. The “rarest of rare” doctrine applied in this verdict is typically reserved for crimes that courts consider exceptionally brutal or of significant social concern, and its use here signals the gravity with which the judiciary viewed the attack on a government employee.

Home Guards in Uttar Pradesh often work alongside regular police to maintain law and order, and cases like this one have renewed attention on the risks such personnel face while carrying out routine assignments. The verdict is expected to be discussed within local law enforcement circles as a reminder of the legal protections available to on-duty government staff.

Conclusion

The verdict brings a six-year legal battle closer to resolution, though the final outcome now rests with the Allahabad High Court’s mandatory review. Once confirmed, the sentence will stand as one of the more significant judicial responses to violence against Home Guards and other government personnel in Uttar Pradesh in recent years. The case will continue to draw attention as it moves through the confirmation process, with families of victims and law enforcement officers watching closely for the final outcome in the months ahead.
