Currently serving as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth will take over as Army Chief on June 30 following the retirement of General Upendra Dwivedi.

New Delhi: The Government has appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) with effect from the afternoon of June 30, 2026. He is currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff and will succeed General Upendra Dwivedi, who is retiring from service on the same day.

The Ministry of Defence announced the appointment, highlighting Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth’s distinguished military career spanning nearly four decades. During his service, he has held several key command, operational, and strategic positions across the Indian Army.

Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth to Assume Charge on June 30

According to the Defence Ministry, Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, and was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986.

The Ministry noted that his wide-ranging service across operational, strategic, and institutional domains reflects his extensive contribution to the Indian Army. His appointment comes at a time when the armed forces are focused on enhancing preparedness and capability development.

Extensive Command Experience Across Diverse Operational Environments

Throughout his career, Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has commanded formations at multiple levels in different operational settings.

His command assignments include leading an Armoured Regiment in the Desert Sector, an Armoured Brigade in the Western Theatre, and a Counter-Insurgency Force in Jammu and Kashmir. These assignments provided him with experience in both conventional military operations and counter-insurgency environments.

As a Lieutenant General, he commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the Indian Army’s premier strike formations. He later served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Delhi Area, where he oversaw important military engagements and ceremonial responsibilities.

Rare Distinction of Commanding Two Army Commands

Following his elevation to Army Commander, Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth led both the South Western Command and the Southern Command.

The opportunity to command two operational Army Commands is considered a rare distinction in military service. During this period, he provided strategic oversight across important operational theatres and supervised various aspects of force management, planning, and readiness.

His tenure in these positions enabled him to contribute to the Army’s operational preparedness and organizational development.

Throughout his career, he has consistently secured top positions in professional military training programmes, reflecting his commitment to continuous learning and leadership development.
