The Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory in Haryana’s Panchkula district conducted a successful high-calibre bomb trial under Air Force supervision, with a 2-kilometre security perimeter declared and strict safety protocols enforced.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Saturday successfully tested a high-calibre bomb at its Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) facility located in Ramgarh, Panchkula district, Haryana. The trial was conducted under the supervision of senior Indian Air Force officials and in strict adherence to established safety protocols.
TBRL officials confirmed that the test was successful and executed without incident.
WHAT IS TBRL?
The Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory is one of DRDO’s premier research facilities, specialising in the development and testing of warheads, bombs, explosives, and ammunition systems. Located in Ramgarh on the outskirts of Chandigarh, TBRL plays a central role in India’s indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem evaluating the lethality, accuracy, and safety of weapons developed for the Indian Armed Forces.
The involvement of senior Air Force officials in supervising today’s trial indicates the bomb being tested is likely intended for aerial deployment either as a precision-guided munition or a general-purpose air-dropped bomb for the Indian Air Force.
SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS: 2KM PERIMETER, VILLAGES ON ALERT
In anticipation of the scheduled test, TBRL, the Panchkula District Administration, and the Police Administration jointly declared a high alert across the surrounding region. A 2-kilometre radius around the test site was designated a sensitive security zone, with special surveillance maintained throughout the area.
Officials had calculated that bomb fragments could potentially travel up to 1.5 kilometres during the trial. The villages of Bhanu and Billa, both falling within proximity of the test corridor, were issued specific instructions to exercise extreme caution. Residents were advised to remain indoors and away from open areas during the trial window.
The layered security response involving the laboratory, district civil administration, and police reflects the standard protocol for high-energy ordnance testing at TBRL, where test parameters can vary significantly depending on the calibre and type of munition being evaluated.
