Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday announced the launch of the Amit Shah Smart Border Project during the Prahari Sammelan held at the Lankamura Border Outpost along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura. The initiative is aimed at modernising border security through advanced technology and stronger coordination between security agencies and local administration.
Addressing Border Security Force personnel and senior officials, Amit Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working with the vision of building a developed India by 2047. He stressed that national security remains the foundation of development and economic growth. The Home Minister said threats such as drug smuggling, cattle smuggling, fake currency circulation and human trafficking must be eliminated to secure the country’s future.
The Amit Shah Smart Border Project is expected to transform traditional border management into a technology-driven system capable of more effectively monitoring infiltration and cross-border crimes. The government plans to integrate surveillance technology, local administration and border forces under a coordinated framework.
Focus on Technology-Driven Border Security
According to the Home Minister, the smart border initiative is currently in its final execution stage. Pilot projects will be launched next year at seven to eight sensitive border locations where the Border Security Force and Sashastra Seema Bal are deployed.
Under the new model, District Magistrates, Superintendents of Police, village Sarpanches, Patwaris and local police officials will receive specific security responsibilities. The government believes this coordinated approach will create an almost impenetrable border security network.
Officials said the Amit Shah Smart Border Project will use modern surveillance systems, digital monitoring tools, and real-time communication technology to detect illegal infiltration and smuggling. The move comes amid growing concerns over cross-border crimes and illegal migration along sensitive border areas.
The Home Minister also announced that the Centre has approved 119 kilometres of newly designed border fencing in Tripura. Construction work for the first phase has already started. He stated that the government would not allow illegal demographic changes through infiltration in states bordering Bangladesh.
Crackdown on Smuggling and Infiltration
During his speech, Amit Shah highlighted the importance of stopping multi-dimensional crimes that affect both national security and the economy. He said fake currency networks and narcotics trafficking are major threats that target the country’s youth and financial system.
Security agencies have been increasing surveillance along the India-Bangladesh border in recent years due to rising concerns related to organised smuggling networks. The BSF has intensified operations in several vulnerable sectors, especially in Tripura, West Bengal and Assam.
The Home Minister praised BSF personnel deployed along the borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan for their dedication and sacrifice. He said jawans guarding difficult frontier regions play a vital role in protecting the country’s sovereignty and internal stability.
Environment Protection Drive Alongside Security Measures
Coinciding with World Environment Day, Amit Shah also participated in a tree plantation drive organised by the BSF at Lankamura. He planted an Agar tree and praised the efforts of the Central Armed Police Forces in environmental conservation.
The Home Minister informed that CAPF personnel have planted more than 6.40 crore trees across the country since 2019. He announced a new target under which security forces will collectively plant over two crore trees annually from next year onward.
Senior leaders, including Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, BSF Director General Pravin Kumar and other top officials, attended the event. The conference focused on border management challenges, infrastructure development and security preparedness along the India-Bangladesh border.
The Amit Shah Smart Border Project is being viewed as one of the government’s biggest border modernisation initiatives in recent years. Officials believe the use of advanced surveillance technology and stronger administrative coordination will significantly improve India’s border security system in the coming years.
