A large-scale rescue operation was launched after a passenger bus overturned on the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway in Gujarat, leaving one woman dead and multiple passengers injured. Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

A woman lost her life and several others sustained injuries on Saturday after a passenger bus overturned on the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway in Gujarat, triggering a swift, large-scale rescue operation as emergency teams rushed to the accident site to assist passengers trapped inside the overturned vehicle.

The incident has once again brought the safety of high-speed expressway corridors in Gujarat under scrutiny, with authorities now examining the precise sequence of events that led to the mishap.

HOW THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED

According to officials, the bus was carrying a group of passengers along the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The sudden loss of control caused the bus to veer off its path and overturn on the highway, trapping several passengers inside the wreckage.

The force of the impact left multiple passengers with injuries ranging from minor to serious, with some requiring immediate and urgent medical attention. Witnesses at the scene described chaotic moments immediately following the crash, as passengers attempted to free themselves from the overturned bus while waiting for help to arrive.

RESCUE OPERATION AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Local residents were among the first to respond, rushing to the scene to assist trapped passengers even before official emergency services arrived. Police personnel and trained emergency responders soon joined the rescue effort, working in coordination to safely evacuate passengers from the damaged vehicle.

Given the scale of the accident, multiple ambulances were deployed to the site to transport the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. Medical teams at the receiving hospitals were placed on alert to ensure that incoming patients received prompt attention.

Authorities have confirmed that one woman succumbed to her injuries, either at the scene or shortly after being rushed to hospital. Several other injured passengers were admitted for further medical care, with doctors closely monitoring the condition of those who sustained more serious injuries. Hospital sources indicate that while some passengers have been treated and discharged, others remain under observation as a precaution.

TRAFFIC RESTORED AFTER RECOVERY OPERATIONS

In the aftermath of the accident, traffic movement on the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway was briefly disrupted as rescue operations and vehicle recovery efforts continued at the site. Police personnel managed traffic diversions in the area to allow emergency vehicles unrestricted access to the crash site.

Once the rescue and recovery operations were completed, and the overturned bus was cleared from the carriageway, officials restored normal traffic flow on the expressway. The disruption, while significant during the response window, did not lead to extended congestion once the route was cleared.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

Police have launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary inquiries are focused on several key factors, including whether driver error or loss of control was the primary cause, the mechanical condition of the bus at the time of the journey, and the road and traffic circumstances prevailing on the expressway when the incident occurred.

Officials have not ruled out the possibility of speed or fatigue playing a role, and a detailed forensic and mechanical examination of the vehicle is expected to form part of the investigation. The findings of the inquiry are likely to determine whether any negligence on the part of the driver, the bus operator, or vehicle maintenance protocols contributed to the crash.

ROAD SAFETY CONCERNS RESURFACE

This accident has reignited concerns around road safety on India’s expanding network of high-speed expressways. Road safety experts have once again stressed the importance of cautious driving, adherence to speed limits, and regular vehicle inspections particularly for commercial passenger buses that operate at high speeds over long distances.

Experts note that as expressway infrastructure across Gujarat and the rest of the country continues to expand, stricter enforcement of driver fitness checks, mandatory rest periods for drivers on long routes, and routine mechanical audits of passenger vehicles will be essential to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
