India has reaffirmed its commitment to international peacekeeping and military cooperation with the deployment of an Army contingent to Mongolia for Exercise KHAAN QUEST 2026, a multinational military exercise scheduled to take place from June 20 to July 3 at the Five Hills Training Area in Ulaanbaatar.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the exercise aims to enhance interoperability, coordination, and cooperation among participating armed forces while conducting peace support operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The event brings together military personnel from several countries to train in a realistic multinational environment and improve preparedness for future peacekeeping missions.
The Indian Army contingent comprises 40 personnel, including troops from a battalion of the JAT Regiment along with soldiers from various Arms and Services. Their participation highlights India’s continued role as one of the world’s leading contributors to United Nations peacekeeping operations and its growing engagement with partner nations in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
Focus on Peacekeeping and Multinational Operations
Exercise KHAAN QUEST 2026 is designed to prepare participating contingents for complex peacekeeping missions that require close coordination among military forces from different countries. The training programme will include joint planning exercises and tactical drills that replicate real-world operational challenges faced during international peace support missions.
The participating troops will undertake activities such as establishing static and mobile checkpoints, conducting patrols, carrying out cordon and search operations, and managing the evacuation of civilians from hostile environments. Training will also include counter-improvised explosive device procedures, combat first aid, casualty evacuation drills, and other mission-critical tasks.
Defence officials believe that such exercises play a crucial role in improving operational effectiveness by allowing troops to learn from each other’s experiences and adopt best practices. The exchange of tactics, techniques, and procedures helps create a common understanding among participating militaries and strengthens their ability to operate together during multinational missions.
India and Mongolia Strengthen Defence Cooperation
India and Mongolia have steadily expanded their defence cooperation over the years through military exchanges, training programmes, and strategic dialogue. Participation in Exercise KHAAN QUEST 2026 reflects the growing partnership between the two countries and their shared interest in regional stability and international peacekeeping efforts.
The exercise began in 2003 as a bilateral training event between the United States and the Mongolian Armed Forces. Due to its success and increasing international participation, it evolved into a multilateral peacekeeping exercise in 2006. The 2026 edition marks the 23rd iteration of the event, making it one of the longest-running multinational military exercises focused on peace support operations.
India regularly participates in multinational military exercises aimed at improving operational coordination and combat readiness. Apart from Exercise KHAAN QUEST, the Indian Armed Forces take part in major international drills such as Yudh Abhyas with the United States, Shanti Prayas, and Exercise Bright Star, strengthening defence cooperation with partner nations across the world. Such engagements provide valuable exposure to different operational doctrines, terrain conditions, and command structures while promoting mutual trust and professional military relationships.
The Ministry of Defence noted that Exercise KHAAN QUEST 2026 will contribute significantly to operational readiness and strengthen camaraderie among participating soldiers. The exercise is also expected to deepen military-to-military ties and reinforce collective efforts toward maintaining global peace and security.
As geopolitical challenges continue to evolve, multinational exercises such as Exercise KHAAN QUEST 2026 have become increasingly important for preparing armed forces to respond effectively to humanitarian crises, conflict situations, and peacekeeping requirements under the United Nations framework. India’s participation underscores its commitment to global stability and responsible international engagement through defence diplomacy and peacekeeping cooperation.
