“Peace Matters, But History Cannot Be Ignored”: Tharoor

Amid ongoing high-stakes talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has made a sharp observation on Pakistan’s emerging diplomatic role.

Speaking on Saturday, Tharoor stated that while peace efforts are welcome, Pakistan’s past actions cannot simply be overlooked if it positions itself as a peacemaker.

No Competition Between India and Pakistan

Tharoor clarified that India is not in competition with Pakistan when it comes to facilitating peace between nations. He emphasized that the ultimate goal should be peace itself, regardless of who helps achieve it.

“Who brings about the peace won’t matter if peace comes,” he said while addressing reporters in New Delhi.

“Past Misdeeds Cannot Be Erased”

However, the Congress leader added a pointed remark, stating that Pakistan’s involvement in peace talks does not erase its historical record.

According to Tharoor, even if Pakistan plays a constructive role in a specific context, it does not wipe away concerns regarding its past actions on the global stage.

Strategic Importance of Pakistan in Talks

Tharoor acknowledged that Pakistan has a direct stake in the outcome of the US-Iran discussions. He highlighted that the country shares a nearly 900-kilometre border with Iran, making regional stability crucial for its own interests.

Additionally, he pointed out Pakistan’s significant Shia population, which adds another layer of relevance to its involvement in such diplomatic engagements.

Talks Held in Islamabad

The ongoing discussions between the United States and Iran are taking place in Islamabad, drawing global attention due to their geopolitical significance.

While details of the negotiations remain closely watched, the talks are seen as a crucial step toward reducing tensions in the region.
